By WSJ's Lot-Stay Time, Made-in-Japan TMC Models Are Top 5 of Hottest 10
The Wall Street Journal reports that the five hottest-selling automobiles in the U.S. in December 2005 were made-in-Japan motor vehicle models of Toyota Motor Corporation. These top 5 are the Scion xA (with a lot-stay time of 9 days), the Scion xB (9 days), the Scion tC (9 days), the Toyota Prius hatchback (10 days), and the Lexus IS Series (11 days).
The five hottest sellers are depicted in the following table in descending order of lot-stay time.

The extraordinary popularity of the 2004, 2005, and 2006 editions of the Prius is likely a consequence of several factors. (1) The 2004, 2005, and 2006 editions of the Prius are mid-size vehicles. (2) They have a new power-train technology that delivers greater acceleration and more miles per gallon.1 (3) The 2004 edition was a Consumer Reports' 2004 Top Pick2 and 2004 Quick Pick3, with a CR predicted short-term reliability in the highest category.2,3,4 (4) The 2005 edition is a 2005 CR Top Pick5, a 2005 CR Reliability Quick Pick6, a 2005 CR Fuel Economy Quick Pick6, and a 2005 CR Owner Satisfaction Quick Pick6, with a predicted short-term reliability in the highest category7. The Prius has an infrequently occurring stalling glitch (see "Prius Has Stalling Glitch, NHTSA Commences Investigation," Auto On Info, June 2005), but Toyota has issued a recall to repair it (see "Toyota Recalls a Batch of Priuses in the U.S., Japan, and Here and There, a Batch of Scion tCs in the U.S., and a Bunch of Various Models in Southeast Asia and Australia," Auto on Info, November 2005).
The one remaining Reliable Two model on WSJ's December 2005 Hot-Off-the-Lot list is the Honda Civic (with a lot-stay time of 13 days). The 2005 vintage of the Honda Civic was a 2005 CR Reliability Quick Pick6. In addition, the Honda Civic Hybrid was a 2005 CR Fuel Economy Quick Pick6, a 2005 CR Owner Satisfaction Quick Pick6, and a 2005 CR Overall Quick Pick6; the Honda Civic EX - a 2005 CR Fuel Economy Quick Pick6 and a 2005 CR Overall Quick Pick6; and the Honda Civic Si - a 2005 CR Fuel Economy Quick Pick6.

The remaining WSJ hottest sellers of December 2005 were the Audi A8 (with a CR predicted short-term reliability in the lowest category8), the BMW 7 Series (with a CR predicted short-term reliability in the lowest category9), the BMW 6 Series (too new for a CR predicted short-term reliability), and the Mini Cooper (with a CR predicted short-term reliability in the middle category10 and an early 2002 Reliability Percentrank of .1311), most, or all, of which seem to be destined for a short-term spot-light life.
