NHTSA Investigates Ford and GM Sedans; Chrysler Recalls a Batch for 'Park' Problems; General Motors Recalls SUVs for Door Latch Corrosion
By James B. Bleeker
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating the 2000-2001 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable sedans regarding a rear coil spring that may fracture and punch a hole in the tire.
It is also investigating General Motors Corporation's 2002 Chevrolet Malibu, Pontiac Grand Am, and Oldsmobile Alero regarding turn signals that may malfunction. GM had a similar problem with, and has made recalls of, the 1999-2001 Malibu, Grand Am, and Alero, subject to the restriction that the vehicle has less than 150,000 miles. (This restriction suggests that General Motors considers its vehicles shot within the first 150,000 miles. For contrast, view Auto on Info's high mileage rosters and galleries and, in particular, the rosters and galleries of high mileage Toyotas and Lexi.)
The Chrysler Group of Daimler Chrysler AG is recalling:
1. About 300,000 2005 Chrysler 300 sedans, Dodge Magnum sedans, Dodge Dakota/Mitsubishi Raider pickup trucks, Dodge Durango sport utility vehicles, Jeep Liberty SUVs, and Jeep Wrangler SUVs regarding a transmission plug that may be missing or improperly staked, the result of which may prevent the driver to place the shift into the "park" position,
2. About 283,000 2003-2005 Dodge Ram pickup trucks regarding a shift that may not be placed fully into the "park" position (inadvertently left just outside the "park" position). To solve the problem, Chrysler is going to stick in an alarm.
General Motors is recalling 105,893 2002-2003 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL SUVs regarding corroding door latches that may permit the opening of the door while the vehicle is in motion. The vehicle will be conducted in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri. The cold weather states of North Dakota and South Dakota are omitted.
