Speediest Dilapidations: General Motors Accounts for 16 of the 20 Worst
J.D. Power & Associates has a hankering for taking polls regarding cars aged 0-3 years (also 0-90 days). However, for those who have an interest in, or cherish, quality and also for those interested in vehicle longevity, the far more interesting question is likely what happens to a model's reliability over the time period from when it is 2-to-4 years old to when it is 6-to-8 years old. More specifically, the query of import is: Which models have the greatest increase of serious problems over this 4-year change in time and which models have the smallest increase of serious problems over this 4-year time period?
The following table answers the first part of this question, per the Reliability Score, for the most recent model year (1997) offering the necessary data.

No Reliable Two - Toyota or Honda - product was among the bottom 50 models.
With regard to the second part of the above query, of those 10 models showing the the smallest decline in the Reliability Score over this 4-year time period were four Honda products - the Honda Civic (-.10), the Honda Odyssey minivan (-.12), the Acura Integra (-.15), and the Honda CR-V (-.15) - and three Toyota products - the T100 pickup truck (-.02), the Lexus LS400 (-.06), and the legendary Toyota Corolla (-.10). (Regarding the Corolla, see Milestones in Automotive Quality.)
Also in the top ten were two Nissan products - the Nissan pickup truck (-.10) and the Nissan Pathfinder sport utility vehicle (-.17), one Mazda product - the Mazda MX-5 Miata (-.19), and one Chrysler product - the 4-wheel drive Dakota pickup truck (which, nonetheless, declined early in reliability and ended up with a final Reliability Grade, per the High Standards, of D and, per the Exacting Standards, of F.)
