Subaru, Honda, and Toyota Account for Consumer Reports' Top Three Small SUVs
By James B. Bleeker
Per Consumer Reports' August 2005 issue, the top three rated 2005 sport utility vehicles are the Subaru Forester 2.5X, the Honda CR-V EX, and the Toyota RAV4. All three received CR's Best All-Around Quick Pick designation and all three had a predicted short-term reliability in the highest category. In addition, the Honda CR-V has a 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average of .99, the highest 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average for all motor vehicle models, the Toyota RAV4 has a 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average of .93, one of the highest 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank averages, and the Subaru Forester has a more modest, but still reputable, 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average of .83. The following table provides links to on-site reviews of two of these vehicles.
Two of CR's Top 3 Rated Small SUVs 2005 Honda CR-V 2005 Toyota RAV4 A the bottom end of the rated 2005 small sport utility vehicles are the Jeep Liberty Sport V6 (with a predicted short-term reliability in the middle category), the Jeep Liberty Limited (too new to have a short-term predicted reliability), and the Pontiac Aztek (with a predicted short-term reliability in the second-from-bottom category). Those 2005 small sport utility vehicles with a predicted short-term reliability in the lowest category are the Saturn Vue V6 and the Land Rover SE.
The Jeep Liberty is too recent to have a 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average, but the Jeep line has a 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average of .36, well into the F range (0.00 to .60) of the Reliability Grades - High Standards. The Pontiac Aztek has an early 2001 Reliability Percentrank of .05, one of the lowest. The 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average for the Saturn line is .35.
