Toyota Recalls a Slew
By James B. Bleeker
In the U.S., Toyota Motor Corporation is recalling:
1. 774,856 2001-2004 Tacoma pickup trucks, 2001-2002 4Runner SUVs, and 2002-2004 Tundra pickup trucks and Sequoia SUVs for a defective ball joint that may cause difficult steering,
2. 4,900 2005 Toyota Avalon sedans for an improperly welded steering column that may result in loss of vehicle control.
In addition, the Detroit News reports that Toyota has recalled earlier in 2005:
3. 92,577 2000-2001 Celica cars for headlights that were directed too high,
4. 22,228 2005 Tacoma pickup trucks to tighten a lock nut on the parking brake pedal.
One or both of the latter two may have been recalls announced in 2004.
The Detroit News gave a total for Toyota's 2005 recalls that exceeded the above recalls, even when the 92,577 Celica recall is included. Recall totals for General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler were omitted.
