Consumer Shift Toward Quality Gives Honda Market Capitalization Greater Than GM's and Ford's Combined
By James B. Bleeker
Consumer shift toward quality automotive products has given Honda Motor Company (with a 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average of .84) a market capitalization (outstanding shares times share price) that exceeds the combined market capitalizations of General Motors Corporation (with a 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average of .29) and Ford Motor Company (with a 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average of .50) by nearly 25%. In addition, the shift toward quality has helped to give General Motors and Ford a bond rating of one notch above junk. The following table sets out the market capitalizations, bond ratings, and Reliability Percentrank averages and grades of several of the major auto manufacturers.
