King of Recalls Recalls Again: General Motors Leaps Past Ford with Recall of 2 Million Vehicles, Including 1.5 Million 2003-2005 SUVs and Pickups
By James B. Bleeker
General Motors Corporation announced recalls of:
1. 1.48 million 2003-2005 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierras crew cab pickup trucks and Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Avalanche, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Hummer H2, Cadillac Escalade, and Cadillac Escalade ESV sport utility vehicles for the center second-row seat belt that routes too high and endangers the abdomen in the event of a collision1,
2. 332,202 2000-2001 1500 Series Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL sport utility vehicles for overheating fuel pump wires that may prevent starting or cause stalling, fuel leaks, or inaccurate fuel level readings,
3. 142,585 1999-2002 1500 Series manual transmission Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks and 2001-20042 2500 and 3500 Series manual transmission Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks for parking brakes that may fail,
4. 69,037 2005 Buick LaCrosse and Buick Allure sedans for brakes that may fail if a brake pedal arm clip bends or falls off,
5. 38,078 2004 Buick Rendezvous and Pontiac Aztek sport utility vehicles for a faulty ignition relay that may prevent starting or cause stalling,
6. 22,115 2002-2004 Saturn L Series wagons for center and passenger-side rear seat belt anchors that fail to comply with U.S. and Canadian safety standards3.
The Associated Press and the Detroit News report that GM has recalled 2.9 million vehicles in 22 recalls in the United States so far this year. Of these 2.9 million vehicles, 2.4 million have been the subject of news articles in the Detroit News, the Detroit Free Press, or the auto business section of Yahoo! News, per site manager's regular inspection. (See "General Motors Starts Year with a Bang: 98,221 Chevrolet and GMC Trucks Are Recalled for Safety Problem," Auto on Info, January 2005, "General Motors 2005 Safety Recalls Take a Bump Up, but Ford Keeps Big Lead: Faulty Power Assist, Accelerator Pedal Spring, and Windshield Bond Prompt Recalls of GM SUVs, Vans, Pickups, Trucks, Coupes, and Sedans," Auto on Info, February 2005, "General Motors 2005 Safety Recalls Take Another Bump Up," Auto on Info, March 2005, and "General Motors Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari Minivans Get Lowest Test Score, Ford's E-150 Gets Lowest Rollover Score, GM Issues Recall of Chevrolet Uplander, Saturn Relay, and Pontiac Montana Minivans," Auto on Info, March 2005.) The following chart depicts year-to-date U.S. recall totals based on news articles found in the above three sources.
For perspective, the following charts provide U.S. recall totals for the first half of 2004 and for 2003, per published recall totals.
From the charts, it may be seen that recalls have a history of favoring GM products.
In addition to General Motors' 2005 year-to-date 2.9 million recalls, another 3.1 million pickup trucks are under upgraded investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for collapsing tailgates. (See "After 13,000 Consumer Complaints and Warranty Claims and 83 Reported Injuries, NHTSA Ratchets Up Investigation into Collapsing Tailgates of Another 3.1 Million GM Pickups," Auto on Info, April 2005.) Although GM management may have little concern for the well-being of its customers, the prospect that a few, or maybe one, personal injury or wrongful death action may cost GM more than a recall of the 3.1 million pickups may prod shareholders, directors, and eventually management to view a recall as wise.
1 Two of the articles listed below referred to the center second-row seat belt as having the routing problem mentioned above; one referred to second-row seat belts as having the problem.
2 The Detroit Free Press article listed below includes model year 2005 2500 and 3500 Series manual transmission pickup trucks within the recall for possible brake failure.
3 Two of the articles listed below referred to the center and passenger-side rear seat belt anchors as not meeting safety standards; one referred to rear seat belt anchors as not meeting safety standards.
