Toyota Camry and Honda Accord Dominate Results of IIHS' Frontal Offset Crash and Side Impact Tests
By James B. Bleeker
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded its Best Pick Frontal designation to the 2002-2005 Toyota Camry, 2003-2005 Honda Accord, 2005 Subaru Legacy, and 2003-2005 Mazda 6 for high performance on its frontal offset crash tests. Of these, only the 2003-2005 Honda Accord and the 2005 Subaru Legacy received a Good, the highest grade, in everyone of the four categories and two subcategories of the frontal crash test - the structure/safety cage, head and neck injury measure, chest injury measure, and restraints/dummy kinematics categories and left leg and foot and right leg and foot injury measure subcategories. The 2002-2005 Toyota Camry received an Acceptable, the second highest grade, in the right foot and leg injury measure subcategory and Goods elsewhere. The 2003-2005 Mazda 6 received an Acceptable in the head and neck injury measure category and Goods elsewhere. Two other midsize car models - the post-November 2004, 2005 Volkswagen Jetta and the 2004-2005 Mitsubishi Galant - received Goods in all categories and subcategories save one; however, in the one exception - the right leg and foot injury measure subcategory - only a grade of Marginal was awarded, depriving the models of Best Pick Frontal designation.
The top four midsize car performers on the Insurance Institute's side impact test were the post-November 2004, 2005 Volkswagen Jetta with front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags (reported as standard equipment), the 2004-2005 Toyota Camry with front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags (reported as optional equipment), the 2004-2005 Honda Accord with front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags (reported as optional equipment in the 2004 model and standard equipment in the 2005 model), and the 2005 Mitsubishi Galant with front seat-mounted combination head and torso airbags (reported as standard). All four received an overall grade of Good on the side impact test. The post-November 2004 Volkswagen Jetta received a Good in everyone of the test's nine categories and the Best Pick Side designation. The head and torso airbag-equipped 2004-2005 Toyota Camry, rated second, received two Acceptables - one in each of the driver pelvis and leg injury measure and the structure/safety cage categories - and Goods elsewhere. The head and torso airbag-equipped 2004-2005 Honda Accord, rated third, received one Marginal in the structure/safety cage category and Goods elsewhere. The 2005 Mitsubishi Galant received an Acceptable in the driver torso injury measure category, a Marginal in the rear passenger head protection category, and Goods elsewhere.
If one intersects the Best Pick Frontal award recipients (the top four performers on the frontal offset crash test) and the Good Overall side impact grade recipients (the top four performers on the side impact test), one has the 2004-2005 Toyota Camry with front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags and the 2004-2005 Honda Accord with front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags, both with a reputation for quality by other measures.
If one intersects the recipients of Good for overall frontal offset crash performance (the top six performers on the frontal offset crash test) and the recipients of Good for overall side impact performance (the top four performers on the side impact test), one has the post-November 2004, 2005 Volkswagen Jetta, the 2004-2005 Toyota Camry with front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags, the 2004-2005 Honda Accord with front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags, and the 2005 Mitsubishi Galant. However, Honda Accord and Toyota Camry Reliability Percentranks and Grades set them substantially apart from the other two, as the following table summarizes.
1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank Averages and Reliability Grades Model 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank Average 1996-2000 Reliability Grade, per High Standards Honda Accord .89 B+ Toyota Camry .87 B Mitsubishi Galant .49 F Volkswagen Jetta .18 F It should be noted that the 2004-2005 Toyota Camry without front and rear head curtain airbags and front seat-mounted torso airbags received an overall grade of Poor, the Institute's lowest.
