General Motors and Chrysler Dominate Consumer Reports Used-Cars-To-Avoid List
General Motors Corporation and the Chrysler Group of DaimlerChrysler AG dominate Consumer Reports' 2005 Used-Cars-To-Avoid list covering model years 1997 through 2004. The two together account for 58.3% of the entries in the list. As in the past, General Motors' model entries exceed those of any other manufacturer; in fact, they are slightly more than double the entries of Chrysler, which has the second highest number of entries on this rather ignominious roster. Below is each manufacturer's percentage of entries on the Used-Cars-To-Avoid list.
Percentage of Entries on Consumer Reports' 2005 Used-Cars-To-Avoid List for Model Years 1997 Through 2004, by Manufacturer Manufacturer Percentage General Motors Corporation 39.3% Chrysler Group 19.0% Volkswagen AG 12.2% Ford Motor Company 7.7% Mercedes-Benz Division 6.0% Volvo Cars 3.8% BMW AG 2.4% Mazda Motor Corporation 1.9% Jaguar Cars, Ltd. 1.5% Nissan Motor Company 1.5% Land Rover 0.9% Isuzu Motors, Ltd. 0.6% Saab Automobile AB 0.6% Hyundai Motor Company 0.6% Porsche AG 0.6% Honda Motor Company 0.6% Kia Motors Corporation 0.2% Mitsubishi Motors Corporation 0.2% Toyota Motor Corporation 0.2% All others 0.0% Note: With regard to the Dodge Stratus (V6) section of the Used-Cars-To-Avoid list, Consumer Reports neglects to provide punctuation, neither a dash (-) nor a comma (,), between '97 and '02. A comma was assumed for the above computations; however, if the omitted punctuation is a dash, about one percentage point would be added to Chrysler's total.
