Additional Measures of Toyota's Dominion in Automotive Quality: Market Capitalizations and Bond Ratings of Toyota vs. General Motors, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, and Volkswagen
By James B. Bleeker
Consumer shift toward quality automotive products has given Toyota Motor Corporation (with a 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average of .90) a market capitalization (outstanding shares times share price) that exceeds the combined market capitalizations of Volkswagen AG (with a 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average of .24), General Motors Corporation (with a 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average of .29), DaimlerChrysler AG (with a 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average of .33), and Ford Motor Company (with a 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank average of .50) by nearly 25%. In addition, the shift toward quality has helped to give General Motors and Ford a bond rating of one notch above junk and DaimlerChrysler - two notches above junk. The following table sets out the market capitalization, bond rating, and Reliability Percentrank average of each of the foregoing auto manufacturers.
Auto Manufacturer Market Capitalizations, Bond Ratings, and Reliability Percentrank Averages Auto Manufacturer Market Capitalization (in billions of U.S. dollars) S&P Bond Rating 1996-2000 Reliability Percentrank Average Toyota Motor Corporation $124.882 AAA .90 Ford Motor Company $20.451 BBB- .50 DaimlerChrysler AG $44.767 BBB .33 General Motors Corporation $16.682 BBB- .29 Volkswagen AG $18.193 A- .24
