Background
The New York Times, in an article entitled "Parched, Big Steel Goes to Its Washington Well," dated January 20, 2002, and authored by Leslie Wayne, reported that Thomas J. Usher, CEO of U.S. Steel Corporation, wants:
1. $12 billion of taxpayer monies to bail out the retirement plans of the old blast and basic oxygen furnace steel industry,
2. Up to 40% tariffs on imported steel, "tariffs that could raise the price of every refrigerator and automobile sold in America and that could threaten thousands of jobs in steel-using companies,"
3. Antitrust exemptions for mergers it has a hankering for.
Nucor Corporation, a modern mini-steel mill corporation, has taken out advertisements to denounce the bail out scheme as "corporate welfare."
