Introductory Remarks This page encompasses achievements based on data available and/or computations completed as of May 28, 2007. Below are the awards and honors that each manufacturer has received and that site manager of Auto on Info deems meritorious. With regard to the 2002 J.D. Power and Associates initial quality awards, only first place is deemed meritorious, partly because Toyota so dominated the 2002 awards, but mainly because experience in the first 90 days of a car's life is rather insignificant relative to usual time periods of ownership. With regard to J.D. Power and Associates initial quality surveys for subsequent years, site manager deems the results too trivial to accord an award, although AOI auto news articles will cover significant points that the results suggest. With regard to second place positions from the remaining lists and rosters, a manufacturer must have two or more entries on the list or roster before it is noted as an award or honor. No note is made of a third place position.

Reading Material To gather a glimpse into why Toyota products so dominate indices of automotive quality, the following list of Harvard Business Review articles may be useful: Maccoby, M. "Another Look at How Toyota Integrates Product Development." Harvard Business Review, 36-49. Spear, S. and Brown, H.K. (September-October 1999). "Decoding the DNA of the Toyota Production System." Harvard Business Review, 97-106. The first article is a book review of two books on two GM plants - one a joint venture with Isuzu; however, most of the print is accorded the Toyota system under the section "Success Stories." In this section, the Honda system and philosophy is discussed as well. Also of interest is the section entitled "The Benefits of Front-Loaded Development" on pages 72 and 73 of the February 2001 issue of the Harvard Business Review.
