Research Projects

In this section I give research projects that are suitable for both the bright middle school student, with some tutorial guidance, and the doctoral candidate.

In Table VIII I identify all those areas where data contrasting the Reliable Two and the Big Three are wanting.

With regard to long term reliability, durability, quietness, smoothness of operation and comfort, it will likely be quite a number of years before we have good data for any manufacturer, as it will be some years before a significant number of Toyotas (with original engine, transmission and if applicable, air conditioner) will have crossed the 500,000-mile threshold, and my guess is that it will be decades and generations of models before a Big Three vehicle, with original engine, transmission and if applicable, air conditioner, crosses this threshold.

Some early enquiries into durability might take the following approaches: 

1.               Select a manufacturing year, say, 1985, perch oneself near a highway and then count up the number of vehicles of that year, by model, line or manufacturer, that pass by.

2.               Select a manufacturing year, say, 1985, and then contact the state motor vehicle registration department to see whether information as to the number of registered vehicles of that year, by model, line or manufacturer, is available. If not in one state, try another.

3.               Select a manufacturing year, say, 1985, and then head to the closest university campus to count up the number of vehicles of that year, by model, line or manufacturer.

4.               Select a mileage, say, 250,000 miles, and ask the local dealerships as to how many vehicles that they service have this or more miles on the odometer, the year, make and model of each such vehicle, and the name and telephone number of the owner of each such vehicle.

5.               Select a mileage, say, 250,000 miles, and ask the state motor vehicle registration department whether there is information available as to the number of vehicles, by year and model, line or manufacturer, with this or more miles. In at least a number of states, when the title certificate changes hands, it is necessary to state the amount of mileage.

Of course additional refinements may be easily conceived and executed.

Some truly fascinating questions of automotive history that will require some statistical refinement are: 

6.               What was the Reliability Index Value of the Toyota Corolla prior to the impairments inflicted and adulterations suffered by the commencement of U.S. manufacturing? This question is likely roughly answerable with the use of some statistical correlations.

7.               When did the Toyota Corolla overtake the various models of Mercedes-Benz in reliability? The question may not be answerable.

An interesting question is: 

8.               Would formal education in reliability information significantly alter the current market share distribution in the locality in which such was given? While I think not, it would be fascinating to see whether some part of the middle third might benefit from it.

Also, there are a couple of interesting projects embedded within this report, which I hope to work on for next year’s review.
