D.
The U.S. Government
Congress and the President
should enact and sign legislation that (1) monitors, and makes publicly
available, all post-office holding speech income, of elected and appointed
officials and civil servants, and (2) repeals the antidumping statutes.
The Office of the United States
Trade Representative should busy itself with investigating bribes by foreign
corporations to foreign governments and identifying and tearing down barriers to
free trade. It should not busy itself with erecting or maintaining trade
barriers domestically or pushing any product or category of product
internationally. See Reliability Table and Charts, B.
The Present Situation, 9. Internationalizing “Made in U.S.A. << Trash”:
Defining the Barshefsky Legacy.
The National Institute of
Standards and Technology should not award the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality
Award to any manufacturer for whose products and those of East Asian competitors
there are readily available data on one or more indices of quality. This is akin
to national suicide. See Reliability Tables and Charts, B.
The Present Situation, 8. The Cadillacs, the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality
Award and an Epitomization of the Quality of Goods Manufactured in the U.S.
E.
Shareholders of the Big Three
Shareholders of the Big Three
have two primary concerns. First is loss of earnings occasioned by reliability
improvements. Second is a multibillion or low trillion dollar fraud action.
With regard to the first, there
appears little or no justification for the Big Three manufacturers to have
improved reliability or durability. Firstly, from Table II, we see that Chrysler
has had the lowest or second lowest Reliability Index Average of all
manufacturers, for which there are data, for our entire history of data, but its
market share has grown from 1993 to 2000, while the market shares of both Ford
and General Motors have declined. Secondly, from the bipolarity Charts II –
VIII, we see a great gulf between the Reliability Index Values and Averages of
the Big Three and those of the Reliable Two; however, in Table VII we see only a
glacial drift in the new passenger vehicle market shares from the Big Three to
the Reliable Two.
Nonetheless, from Table IV we
see that the Big Three have significantly improved the reliability of certain
models, notably certain pickups. See section Reliability Tables and Charts, C.
Trends and Currents, 2. The Big Gainers. Shareholders should insist
on hard data that show specific earnings that have accrued from such reliability
improvements and also lost earnings from lost sales of replacement parts and
replacement vehicles that have accrued from the same reliability improvements.
If the two combined yield a net loss of too many billion, management should be
fired.
With regard to the second
concern, with the gulf in reliability shown in Charts II through VIII, none of
the Big Three should make any reference to, or suggestion of, quality in any
advertisement, in the absence of a clear, demonstrable need for doing so. This
simply invites a fraud action of nearly immeasurable proportion. Hence, it would
seem prudent for shareholders to fire any and all management involved in the
creation, approval, and/or oversight of any advertisement referring to, or
suggesting, quality in any of the Big Three products, unless a clear need for
such an advertisement can be demonstrated.
F.
Prospective Jurors
In a legal action, an injured
party vs. one of the Big Three, there are two competing considerations that you
may wish to weigh. One is that with reliability numbers like those in this
review, any person who buys a Big Three vehicle should, arguably, be deemed to
have accepted any and all risks of ownership of such a vehicle. The other is
that nearly all buyers, or the great bulk of the buyers, of Big Three vehicles
are, arguably, hapless nitwits, the defendant Big Three manufacturer knew, or
should have known, this, and consequently there was an extra duty on the Big
Three manufacturer to design its vehicles so that a hapless nitwit might not
injure himself/herself in the operation of his/her vehicle. Where you come down
on these two thoughts may decide the case for you.
