In this section we draw some conclusions and cite some bases.

A.      Consumers with 1980s Made in Japan Toyota Experiences

The recommendations and principles in this section are only for consumers with 1980s made in Japan Toyota experiences.

1.  Recommendations

Here I make some specific recommendations for this group of consumers with standards made exacting by enamoring experiences.

Toyota Camry              If a consumer, with 1980s made in Japan Toyota experiences, is interested in purchasing a Camry, likely only a pre-1994 made in Japan Camry will be satisfying and meet expectations. This follows from quite an assortment of tables, charts and observations. First are Tables I and II that display the great gap between Toyota products and those of the Big Three. This is combined with the observation that many of the suppliers for North American made Toyotas also supply the Big Three. This is followed by the observation that even if one purchases a made in Japan Camry after 1993, many replacement parts and an increasing percentage of original parts are made in North America. Next follows Chart XXI that shows the collapse of the Corolla at about the time of significant North American parts sourcing and assembly. Finally, comes Table VI which summarizes the best evidence to date that there exists a sizable gap between a made in Japan Toyota Camry and a North American made Camry in one, all or some combination of the following areas: reliability, durability, dependability, quietness, smoothness of operation and comfort.                                     There is one caveat. I have not encountered a Camry owner with significantly more than 350,000 miles on the vehicle. So, whether the engine and transmission begin to appreciably deteriorate shortly after 350,000 miles or at 3,000,000 miles, I simply have no evidence, not even anecdotal evidence. One possible approach is to review the Comments on cartalk.com for information on durability. Also, check the same for information on reliability, dependability, quietness, smoothness of operation, and comfort. 

Toyota Corolla             If a consumer, with 1980s made in Japan Toyota experiences, is interested in purchasing a Corolla, likely only a pre-1990 made in Japan Corolla will be satisfying and meet expectations.                                     Here also it is too early to tell what the reasonable life expectancies of a 1980s made in Japan Corolla engine, transmission and air conditioner are, although my personal experiences to date suggest that such exceed 850,000 miles. Toyota pickups             If a consumer, with 1980s made in Japan Toyota experiences, is interested in purchasing a Toyota pickup, likely only a pre-1996 made in Japan Toyota pickup will be satisfying and meet expectations.                                     Here also it is too early to tell what the reasonable life expectancies of a Toyota pickup engine, transmission and air conditioner are, although I have heard, from a reasonably reliable source, that the known highest mileage Toyota pickup has more than 700,000 miles. Again, one might check the Comments on cartalk.com for information on durability. Also, check the same for information on reliability, dependability, quietness, smoothness of operation, and comfort.

From the foregoing, Tables I and II, Chart XXI, Table VI, Consumer Reports, and cartalk.com comments, in that order, I offer the following summary of recommendations:

As always, a used vehicle should be closely inspected, especially for anomalous deterioration, abuse and collision. With regard to the Toyota Previa minivan, check the Comments at cartalk.com for one alleged shortcoming in particular. One caveat with regard to the Toyota Land Cruiser is that features for a particular year may be far more significant than a particular year’s features of any other of the above recommended models. For example, I happen to like only post-1999 Toyota Land Cruisers, while for many of the other models I have only a slight preference for some years over other years.

As may be seen from the “To Avoid” list, I would avoid any North American made Toyota vehicle, with about that meticulousness with which I would avoid the Ebola virus.

2.  Principle of Salutary Avoidance

From Tables I and II, Chart XXI, Table VI and especially Chart XXIV, we have the following:

Any U.S.A. manufactured product should be deemed unbuyable at any positive price, provided that there is a made in Japan alternative.

Of course, this presumption is rebuttable by clear and convincing data to the contrary. However, if there is none, I offer it as a guiding principle of life.

3.  Principle of Reasonable Expectation

From Tables I and II, Table VII and just about everything else in this review, we have the following:

If you hire a workman who drives a Big Three vehicle to do some repairs about your home, you should anticipate that his standards of workmanship are such that after he has completed the job to his satisfaction, either you or he will have to spend the same amount of time, or more, or much more, to do all of the repairs needed to meet your standards of workmanship. Hence, you should obtain from any carpenter or workman who drives a Big Three vehicle, a quote for a completed job, in advance.

Also, if you hire a professional who drives a Big Three vehicle, meticulously monitor his performance and review his work, as it is likely something will go undone.

I have found this principle particularly prudent, although my experiential “data base” is very small.

 4.  Principle of Reasonable Valuation

From Tables I and II, Table VII and just about everything else in this review, we have the following:

If a home comes onto the market and the owners drive Big Three vehicles, you should be prepared to subtract up to 175% from the appraised value, depending upon the amount of repairs needed to bring it up to your standards.

In the end, the question may come down to: How valuable is the land to you?
