 3.  Noteworthy Models

 a.  The Toyota Camry

A version of the Camry, either Camry or Camry 4, has been within the Top Ten models for every pair of manufacturing years discussed in this review. Chart IX gives the Reliability Index Values for the version for which the data are available.

Warning: In more recent years, a significant number of Toyota Camrys have been made in the U.S. For these and those made in Japan, there has been increased North American sourcing of parts. Hence, even the purchase of a new made in Japan Camry poses the risk of North American made original and/or replacement parts. Consequently, the purchase of a new Camry may be unsuitable for a consumer with made in Japan Toyota experiences or a consumer who plans to own and enjoy a Camry vehicle for 20 or more years and 300,000 or more miles. For the latter, the purchase of a used Camry that was made in Japan in the 1980s or in the early 1990s may be the only suitable alternative.

 b.  The Toyota Pickup

A version of the Toyota Pickup, either Pickup or Pickup with 2-wheel drive, has been within the Top Ten models for every pair of manufacturing years discussed in this review. Chart X gives the Reliability Index Values for the version for which data are available.

Warning: New Toyota pickups sold in the U.S. are manufactured in North America and may be unsuitable for a consumer with made in Japan Toyota experiences. For such, the only suitable alternative may be a used Toyota pickup manufactured in the 1980s or first half of the 1990s.

 c.  Toyota’s Lexus LS400

For the entire history of this model’s Reliability Index Values, it has been in the Top Five – first in the pair of manufacturing years 1990-1991 and second in the pairs of manufacturing years 1991-1992 and 1992-1993. For 1990-1991, the Lexus LS400 recorded the highest Reliability Index Value of any model in the entire history of available data. Chart XI gives these Reliability Index Values.

This model is made in Japan exclusively; however, it may be prudent for a made in Japan Toyota owner to enquire prior to purchase of a new Lexus LS400 (1) whether Toyota plans to commence the manufacture of the LS400, or its components, in North America anytime soon, (2) whether it has, for the year of intended purchase, North American made components and (3) if so, what components are made in North America. If the last is obtainable, you may be able to decide whether the Lexus with the North American made components is still more akin to a sedan than a tin lizzie, rattletrap or rock.

 d.  The Mazda Miata

For the second consecutive pair of manufacturing years, the Mazda Miata has achieved the highest Reliability Index Value. Chart XII depicts these Reliability Index Values.

Some denigrate this achievement by saying that Mazda Miatas have very low mileage and that whatever correction Consumer Reports may make, if any, for low mileage fails at the very low mileage of Miatas. Maybe true, in part, but I think that that the argument is insufficient to take Mazda Miata outside the class of Noteworthy Models.
